The boo-boo face, never before captured on film
Years ago, a friend with older kids told me to snap pictures of my kids when they were crying. She said someday, I'd want to remember that look.
This is the sort of advice that gives you pause, because they only thing you are thinking when your child is crying is PLEASE STOP PLEASE STOP PLEASE STOP. It's not typically an endearing form of behavior. Well, except for when Max does what we call his boo-boo face, which makes me melt every time. He juts out his bottom lip, wells up and generally looks pitiful.
Max has been doing the boo-boo face since he was a baby, and only does it when he is very sad. Otherwise, if it's a sad-mad type of reaction, he lets out this charming screech that makes you fear for your eardrums.
In this shot, it was raining outside and I'd just told Max we wouldn't be able to go to the rides. I knew he'd make the face the second I told him, and I had my camera ready. He did not disappoint. I did feel a little mean snapping it as he sniveled but someday, I am sure, he will thank me. Or sue me.
Have you taken pics of your kids crying?
Honestly, I don't. I have a picture of my 6 year old falling asleep on the toilet on his first day of school, but when he cries, it's just so sad, all I can do is try to comfort him. :-(
ReplyDeleteI do. But I only take pictures for ridiculous tantrums. When they are actually sad or hurt I don't. I usually tell them if they are throwing a tantrum that I'm just gonna get my camera and take a picture. Usually looking at a picture of them pitching a fit sends them into a fit of giggles, which is far more enjoyable. I should post a blog sharing all the pictures. It's pitiful! There is a blog out there somewhere I've come across a few times written by a dad who similarly posts pictures of his kid throwing a for and the reason for his crying. It's usually amusing.
ReplyDeleteThis is my face every Monday morning.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Amy.
ReplyDeleteYou may enjoy this, if you haven't already seen it.

Oh, I've seen that! So funny. Much easier to laugh at other kids' crying than when it's your own.
DeleteHahaha! Ellen, that is hysterical and as a matter of fact, I snagged a shot of Faith with that same face just 2 wks ago. She was acting out bc she had gotten in trouble and she would NOT stop having a fit! So I got out the phone and made a big deal of shooting her and sure enough it took about 10 seconds b4 she was laughing her head off! Yeah and she still laughs when I show her that picture!
ReplyDeleteIs it just me, or are pictures of babies crying about something frivolous absolutely hilarious? Reasons My Son is Crying is one of my favorite tumblrs!
ReplyDeleteOh, poor Max. But, I'm so glad you did get a picture because it's too cute not to share. My daughter used to watch herself cry in the mirror. I always told her it would come back to bite her and guess what? She is a mom. Aww, sweet revenge. To bad I didn't get a picture of it. That would have really been leverage!
ReplyDeleteIt's a little mean but he does look adorable my parents have taken plenty of pics of me crying my mom pulls them out sometimes it's SO embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteI took a video of my daughter crying when she was only a couple weeks old because we called it her 'goose honk' That's exactly what it sounded like! And to this day, it makes me smile when I see it BC I know I won't hear it from her again. Lol
ReplyDeleteThese are my very favorite pictures, no matter how wrong it is.
ReplyDeleteawww, he has the sweetest face anyway but especially when he is crying!
ReplyDeleteI have a video of my eldest son crying, I took him 6 weeks to cry and he sounded so cute, it was the sweetest sound I had ever heard because I had waited so long, now his laughter is the sweetest and I have videos of that too.
ReplyDeleteI have a video of Tucker crying, as well. It was when he first started speech therapy and we were trying to get him to engage with us at table time for two minutes (I'm happy to report he's now up to longer stretches). The therapist actually suggested I take a photo or video because I'd want to remember. I, too, felt really mean but I'm glad I have it because I will never again see - in real life - what my little boy looked like more than a year ago when struggling to pay attention to us. Also? The boo-boo face of Max's is adorable. Sorry (because it's heartbreaking too) - he is too precious. That face!!!
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to get a pic of my son's sad face...it does feel a little mean when I'm trying to do it, but seriously, it is so adorable. Nothing like the ugly cry of adult-hood.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness you are so funny, I found this page by accident totally worth it!
