Kids' favorite security objects: Max's new crush
In recent years, Max has had many objects of affection: The plastic bowl, plate and cup he liked to sleep next to. The Cars 2 CD player we got for his birthday that he'd literally just sit and gaze at in awe. A purple Halloween pail he took everywhere, including school. A gigantic purple bowl he painted at a pottery place that we once had to bring on a hike.
And now, Max is glued to a Cars 2 tin lunchbox. He literally won't leave home without it. We'll almost make it to the car when all of a sudden he'll announce "Lunchbox!" (sounds like "uh-ah!") and one of us will have to run in and get it. The lunchbox contains a carton of chocolate milk and an applesauce cup, in case of snack emergency. Max has never once touched them; he just likes toting them around. And not for nothing, clutching the handle does his fine-motor skills good.
Max took his lunchbox to Sabrina's cabaret show this weekend. She's been in a performance class and they were singing Thriller. Max has gotten comfortable going to his own school shows, but he's never attended anything Sabrina's been in. Armed with his trusty headphones and lunchbox, though, off we went.
Max hovered in the back by the door, just in case he had to make a quick getaway, but he stayed in the auditorium. He showed a few people the lunchbox so they could see how cool it was. He watched the show in fascination. He stayed the entire time—and then he didn't want to leave.
I've got to figure out more ways to take advantage of his new lunchbox confidence.
So, what's your child's fave security object?

Are you related to any famous Russian ballet dancers? That picture of Max immediately brought to mind this:

He he. My parents did take me to see The Nutcracker a lot as a kid. Hmmm. Wonder if that has something to do with it.
DeleteMy loves his Angry Birds stuffed animals. He always has to have at least one with him. Though at night, he lines up the whole army of birds and pigs in a row beside him on his bed.
ReplyDeleteOne of my daughters never takes off two elastic bracelets--one on each wrist--unless she's bathing. They've gone through a few iterations, though one of them is from a bag of about a dozen so we have backup. She also dislikes taking off her baseball cap, though she must do at school. If a bracelet breaks or she can't remember where she's put her cap when she's gotten out of the shower, look out!
ReplyDeleteThe same daughter also wore a Dora the Explorer backpack for about six months (unless she was in the tub)when she was two-ish. If we tried to take it off of her when she went to bed, she would flip.
My other daughter has her little "hordes" that she keeps here and there; as long as each random assortment of items is where it's supposed to be, she doesn't need to carry anything with her.
Max you are a star staying and watching your sister! Well done! Love Cars 2! My kids have never had security things but I still have a soft toy that is now 37 years old that I still adore xx
ReplyDeleteMy Olivia has A HUGE collection of stuffed animals that go along with her favorite movies. Whichever movie she is currently obsessed with (this week it's Mulan), that friend goes with us everywhere. This week Mushu and Little Brother have traveled to soccer games galore! ;)
ReplyDeleteMy flute. Haha
ReplyDeleteIf I were Max's age I might have liked the lunchbox as well :) I didn't need security objects growing up is that weird?
ReplyDeleteYou have a cheerful and cute son. Kids are really amazed with lunchbox like my daughter as well. We take it as a bonding time preparing her lunch. She just loves it.
ReplyDeleteI know this is terribly off topic, but I just saw a commercial for care.com that had a little boy with down syndrome. They did it without out drawing attention to the fact that he has an extra chromosome, and they gave him a speaking part.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen it yet but will look for it--that is awesome! Thanks for the heads up.
DeleteI had one, what I called bunny. It was a bunny, to be honest, and lasted from 1998 to 2011, or so. Now, to go to sleep, I cuddle with a cat. :P
