When Lisa Kandziorski, 18, started college at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale this fall, she got a really awesome roommate: her sister Lisa, 22, who has cerebral palsy. Amy's planning to be a social worker; Lisa's studying to be a kindergarten teacher, as reported on
New Lenox Patch.
For Christmas, Amy created
this tribute to her sister. It's a two-tissue video because of the love that shines through your screen, but it's also inspiring. "Never give up... Lisa didn't," Amy notes.
Words for our kids to live by. Heck, us too!
Loved this, thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeletecollege is a long way off as my son is 4 this month, but we all; think about the future esp with a child with extra needs!
This inspired me to hope that he will attend college if he wants and maybe even away from home. Perhaps with his cousin who is a year older. Or maybe by then some colleges with have programs to assist kids with special needs to live on campus away from home and be successful : )
Em, I have hope that more opportunities will open for our kids down the road!
DeleteSo awesome. Thanks for sharing. Two tissue? I cleared out about 1/2 the box. As you said, the love that shines through just warms the world.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much I needed this. I am trying to dream bigger for Emma. I loved the LOVE in this video. I am drenched in tears. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI worked sort of as a PCA for a guy with CP while I was in college and he recently graduated from law school. I pity the lawyer who goes easy on him in the courtroom out of any sense of pity because he will absolutely serve them their you-know-what on a platter. Though their love shines through, more than anything I am impressed that those sisters can live happily together in college because I don't know any siblings who have ever been able to make that happen.
ReplyDeleteSO true!!! I was actually impressed by that, too. I love my sis but I don't think I could have roomed with her in college—and vice versa! (Hi, JUDY!)
DeleteSuch a beautiful video! Thanks for sharing it with us, Ellen! <3
ReplyDeleteThere are many colleges that provide accessible dorms and help students with personal care. I think it's great that the two sisters were able to live together and still be friends, but there are other options out that for college students with disabilities other than depending on family members to provide their personal care. The University of Illinois in Champaign is one of the leaders in the country in providing such accommodations. They also have a really kick-ass women's wheelchair basketball team! (My alma mater -- had to put in a plug!)
ReplyDeleteI loved the video too in fact I shared it on my blog check it out http://nisha360.com/2012/12/day-821-for-my-sister-lisa/ Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWow thank you for posting this on your blog :) that means a lot!
