One of the hardest parts of having a boy and a girl: having a girl who only wants to wear boy clothes. I know, I know, I should let it go. But I feel like I am being deprived. Sabrina refuses to wear girly tops or bottoms. When I ask her to wear a dress for special occasions, she wails, as if I just asked her to quit eating for a year. On occasion I have offered her money—good money, I tell you—to wear dresses, and she has turned me down.
I was particularly tormented during a recent TJ Maxx fall fashion show I attended, courtesy of Audrey from Mom Generations, who has four boys and will never have to despair over a girl who won't wear any cute dresses. Some of the stuff that's hot this fall for boys: darker-wash jeans, vintage-style tees, zip-up hoodies (evidently, purple isn't hot for boys, nobody tell Max). What's in for girls: sweaters and sweater dresses with cowl necks, belts, hoods, dolman sleeves, stripes, skinny and boot leg jeans. Kids were showing off such cute clothes:
When Sabrina, Max and I recently went back to school shopping, I wasn't feeling optimistic—well, other than when Max sight read three words: school, play and TJ Maxx. I figured we could just hit the boys department at TJ Maxx for both kids, and be done. Only Sabrina actually wanted GIRL TOPS. First she picked out a two-piece sweater (aka a "two-fer") that came with a necklace ($12.99!), and a few other totally cute tops.
I was suspicious, which is what happens when you buy your kid pretty tops and dresses that sit in her closet, unused, and she will not even accept a bribe to put them on.
"Are you sure you're going to wear that stuff?" I asked.
"Yes, Mommy!" she said, sweetly.
"Are you sure?" I asked again.
"Yes!" she proclaimed.
She is so attached to the two-piece sweater she has tried to sleep in it. Look how pretty:

UPDATE: The winner is Diana R. Happy shopping!
I received a gift bag at the event that included a gift card and a purple knapsack and boy, was Max psyched.
Her seamless socks from Therawear--only things she can put on her feet that don't drive her nuts!
ReplyDeleteOh - I get to be the first to comment. Yay me!
ReplyDeleteMy Lily's favorite outfit these days? Her birthday suit.
But since that's not acceptable for outings, we'll put that gift card to good use, should we win it! :)
My little guy's favorite outfit these days is a pair of Superman underwear and his blue crocs.
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't have any kids, but I love your blog (and your anti-R-word cause on Twitter!) so I'm going to comment with my little sister's favorite thing to wear. She's five and she absolutely loves her princess dresses. (Yes, that is plural.) Sometimes she makes paper crowns and hats, then makes my mom take photos on her cell and text them to me. Adorable!
ReplyDeleteI have a 2 1/2 year old and his favorite clothing is his "red car shirt. THE ORANGE ONE." which is an orange t-shirt with Lightning McQueen from CARS on it. Runner up is his BLUE "red car" t-shirt, and then any of his Thomas and Friends t-shirts. And after THAT nothing at all but some painted toenails and a breeze.
ReplyDeleteDear Ellen,
ReplyDeleteI would be happy to wear a dress if you would pay me. Please let me know if I should send you my address so you will know where to send the check.
Sincerely,
Paula
Elena is a girly girl (I didn't want to wear dresses until high school). Her favorite colors are pink, purple, and orange. In that order--which is why her wardrobe consists mainly of pink, followed by purple and then orange. She LOVES to be matchy-matchy with her hair bows--and really love it when everything matches her pink crutches. Girl loves sequins--and just got into leopard print. Lord help me.
ReplyDeleteJoshua is only 2 and isn't talking yet so he can't tell me what he likes but I guarantee he likes his Thomas outfits and if he had any Elmo clothes he'd love them too. Hoping to get him some Elmo stuff if TJ Maxx has any!
ReplyDeleteI follow you on FB!!

ReplyDeleteMy girls favorite right now is a poodle skirt her grandma made her. She keeps trying to pull it out of the dirty laundry pile to wear it to school more than once in the same week.
ReplyDeleteWell, technically these aren't *clothes* but they are my kiddo's favorite thing to wear: a kitty ears headband and cat tail that she co-opted from one of my old Halloween costumes. She wears the ears and tail (which she has attached to a carabiner clip for easy on-off via the "loophole" on her waistband or, if what she's wearing doesn't have belt loops, she clips it right to her underwear) *everywhere* we go. Well, everywhere that I let her - so far, she has not been Kitty Kid at church, thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win!
Cheers!
Oh, I'm a Twitter follower - @MissusSmith .
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Well, Sam has been into running around naked lately but when he wears clothes we love the cargo pants from The Children's Place because they look great and they have an elastic waistband - so Sam can get them down to use the toilet.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter has been into my homemade creations (she is 3) so I am excited. It won't last. : )
I have boys who each wore basically the same pair of shorts and favorite shirt all summer. Boys are so easy. My little girl would try to emulate them if she could. She prefers her MN VIkings jersey or vacation bible school t-shirts. Good memories in those.
ReplyDeleteMary's favorite clothes are any shirts, sweaters or dresses that have stripes on the sleeves. She loves to look at the stripes!
ReplyDeleteKC has just recently began caring what clothes he wears. Now, he is 5, so he doesn't really care much, but when I put on his Handy Manny shirt he gets super excited! Nemo is another fav.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the opportunity to enter :) I am a faithful reader, but not generally a commenter.

Oh gosh my 6 year old is the totally GIRLY GIRL, nail polish, dresses, hair styles, I sometimes feel like i need to purchase a ton of marie claire magazines just to keep up with this fashonista i have living in my house!
ReplyDeleteI love Sabrina's sweater and necklace! Be thankful she can wear pants well, my 4 year old has dwarfism and she wears dresses 95% of the time because it's so hard to find pants that fit or that can be altered easily. Maybe once she hits pre-teen she'll have a skirt phase? There are some cute styles out there.
ReplyDeleteMy 6 year old son is all about anything that has a dinosaur on it! Seriously, anything.
