Savoring the cuteness
Does it ever occur to you, as you're watching your children doing something particularly adorable, that you'd better enjoy their kidliciousness now because soon it will be gone? I had one of those moments last night. I wasn't feeling great (thank you, strep throat), but then Max came out of the bath and inexplicably wanted to wear Sabrina's pajamas. Not just any pj's—her tiered pink Dora nightgown. Who was I to stop him from cross-dressing?
Then Sabrina, not to be outdone, wanted to wear Max's pajamas.
Then both kids just sort of rolled around and giggled and acted silly, and the whole time I was thinking, Wow. That is just too much cuteness in one room.
I don't take these moments of child bliss for granted. I've written before about how early on in Max's life, I was so consumed by accepting he had issues, dealing with his issues and freaking about his future that I couldn't enjoy the yummy baby that he was. I still worry (news flash), but I'm truly able to enjoy his cuteness.
Whatever challenges our kids have, they are not the least bit cuteness challenged. Especially when they are wearing their sister's tiered pink Dora nightgown.
OK, gush: What's the last cute thing your kids did that made you all melt-y?

Oh, I know...if I knew then what I know now. I think that so often, and it chokes me up.
ReplyDeleteAll that time wasted, worrying. What does worrying do anyway?
It's like the saying goes, "She'd have relaxed a lot more in Chapter one, had she known she'd be alright by Chapter five."
Just another thing, another facet to parenting this type of gig, that the majority don't know about.
The other half blissfully sighs as they cradle their newborn, while we sweat out their days in NICU.
Sometimes you look back on it, and you can't believe you survived it all.

Delicious is how I describe those moments.
ReplyDeleteThe last cute thing she did was ask my dad "pop-pop does your heart hurt?" since we were talking about his chest pain.
My 28 month old pointed at me 2 days ago and said 'Mama', I am absolutely overjoyed. He also took my hands and put them on his waist looking for a hug. It is the first time he has 'asked' for a hug. We are having an amazing week :D Love the Dora nightdress, will he change to pink being his favourite colour? Doubt it :D Jen.
ReplyDeleteI love when Giselle makes out with her stuffed frog! She is obviously waiting for him to turn into a prince!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite memories was from when my kids were roughly 1 & 2 years old. My son was older and he was playing with an empty 1 liter bottle. He thought it was grea fun until he started tapping his little sister on the head and I told him 'no, tell sissy you're sorry' He did and continued to play with the bottle. A few minutes went by and he started hitting the floor with it, which wasn't hurting the floor, but the tap, tap, tapping was starting to wear on my nerves. So I turned around and said "Marshall no" to which he promptly stopped hitting the floor and said "sorry floor"!
ReplyDeleteHi,

You are an amazing story teller and mom, too.
I have had 6 children, two with very complex congenital heart disease and 2 diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders and another pendedin ASD diagnosis.
My oldest son spent his entire life in the NICU-9 weeks, due to CHD complications.
It's nice to 'meet' you~

All That and a Box of Rocks
I have a pink fan at home--that outfit would be right up his alley!
ReplyDeleteI love it when my son and I are enjoying a morning story or eating breakfast and he hears hubby upstairs walking and then coming down the steps. He sits up big and gets the hugest smile on his face. So so so cute.
ReplyDeleteEmily loves Veggie Tales. When the DVD comes on and that song starts, she gets this ear to ear grin on her face that is just DELICIOUS! She also has this little "happy-click" that she does (she clicks her tongue on the roof of her mouth when she likes something). She does that when I sing to her and that just melts my heart!
ReplyDeleteOh Ellen I love it! Max looks so cute! lol your children are beautiful. thanks for the birthday candle blow out tip too I will be using that one!

I'm going to go with the fantabulous way Charlie tries to catch your eye when a particularly good song comes on.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I totally agree with all the thoughts on wasted worries. My favorite times are when we laugh at jokes. Emma loves to talk about farts, poop, and all that unsavory stuff. It cracks her up. It is the kind of stuff my mother would have died over. I relish it. I also love it when she tries to belt out tunes and sing with us. It's great. I love those moments
ReplyDeleteCuteness is watching Faith have her first play date with a friend from girl scouts! Her first friend coming over to our house!
ReplyDeleteAhh, this post really blessed me today! Thank you for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteLove the cute! This post reminded me of one of my own:

Thanks for sharing your experiences. :)
My son is 2.5 years old has PDD-NOS. 2 weeks ago, he kissed me for the first time. We were reading a bedtime book where the Mommy & Daddy each kiss the little boy in the story "night night" and out of nowhere, my son turned his face to me & kissed me. I wanted to be sure that he meant to do it, so I asked him, "Kiss Mommy?" And he did it again, laughing. I got about 5 kisses that night before putting him to bed. Smiled for hours after & went to sleep smiling. He's also greeting me at the door w /a hug when I get home at night, after a short, but unhappy period of practically ignoring me when I got home (or worse, screaming). Hugs & kisses - doesn't get any better than that.
