Kid goodies giveaway: a DVD that encourages kids to be more helpful
OK, so the kids are not going to start cleaning the house or whipping up dinner after watching this Lend A Helping Hand DVD, but they will get some great food for thought about how to better help others.
Sprout's Band of Bloggers recently sent me the DVD to check out. It has an all-star cast—we're talking Barney, Angelina Ballerina, Bob The Builder, Fireman Sam and Thomas & Friends, and it's hosted by Kelly and Chica from The Sunny Side Up Show. They're part of Sprout's Let's Grow DVD line. The stories are all about what it means to be helpful, caring and a good friend. Sabrina best loves the Angelina Ballerina episode in which Angelina gives away one of her old dolls, then regrets it. Max is fascinated by the Fireman Sam story, which involves chaos surrounding a broken washing machine and lots of helpers. I think the stories have given the kids new perspective; as Sabrina says, "It's good to help other people because...it's good." Hey, we're getting there.
I have two Lend a Helping Hand DVDs to give away. To enter, leave a comment about how your mom taught you to be helpful in this world. One thing my mom used to do when we were out is escort little old ladies across the street; to this day, I do the same. Although once, someone thought I was about to mug her and slammed me with her purse.
Note, you must leave your e-mail address if yours is not visible on your blog.

My mom taught us to hold doors for people. If we were going in or out of a store, and saw someone else was entering or existing, we would hold the door rather than letting it close. I still do that and it amazes me how people say "thank you" like they can't believe a door was held open for them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review and giveaway!

ReplyDeleteSprout! My son E. loves Sprout, in a way that only a truly "special" kid can. He used to draw pictures of the logo literally all day long for at least a month straight.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have cable, or anything but videos since our converter box malfunctioned, so E. tried to order Direct TV just to get Sprout. Online, he placed some sort of request and he is now on the Direct TV mailing list under his name. They called the house once to follow up, and he saw Caller ID and answered the phone and talked to the representative and tried to order. When I finally got the phone, this guy was really confused that his potential customer was a seven-year old autistic kid.
All because of Sprout.
My mom would help us make cookies or think of service things we could do for friends and neighbors.

ReplyDeleteMy mom taught me to always offer to help when I'm visiting others, especially with things such as cleaning up the kitchen after meals. It gets you in the habit of always being ready and willing to do what others need help with.

I was taught to help elderly neighbors as much as I could. I know I'd appreciate the same help when I'm older.
ReplyDeleteMy mom taught me to help with the laundry and ironing. She has a weird love for laundry and ironing and tried to instill this love in me- wish it worked!
ReplyDeleteI can't remember anything specific that my mother taught us about being helpful, we just learned by seeing what she did. My Mom and Dad taught us to respect ourselves and other people. I guess part of that was to be helpful.

ReplyDeleteMy parents taught us to hold the door for people, especially elderly or those who look like they could use an extra hand. They just generally taught us to help others when it looks as though they could use it.
