What kind of slimeball steals a kiddie booster seat?

Make that TWO. Right off our front porch. Can you believe it? Does this look like something you'd be dying to get your hands on if you were a crook?!

I didn't know the packages had been delivered and so they sat outside overnight. When I spotted them in the morning and lugged them in, I realized the boxes were suspiciously light, even though the tops were sealed. But, a-hah!, the sides had been slit open, the seats removed.

Um, is there some black market in booster seats I don't know about? Can you hock them at a pawn shop? Maybe robber guy/girl was going to return them to Babies "R" Us for cash or credit? Maybe, best-case scenario, it's a dad/mom who desperately needed two booster seats for their kids, which doesn't excuse the robbery but does give understandable circumstances? Maybe martian parents landed in our backyard overnight and realized they needed booster seats for their space ship?

The store is kindly sending us new ones, hopefully nobody will swipe 'em.

Word up about another good giveaway: The BillMeLater folks are doing a giveaway today on their blog, Free The Shopper. You could win a $250 Step 2 gift card (plus a $500 donation to charity). It's open till 11:59 EST, and there's a fun post from Claudine Pépin, daughter of famous chef Jacques Pépin.

  2. What kind of slimeball? An especially big one is my guess. Stealing is never right, but it somehow seems worse when it's something intended to keep a child safe. In our neck of the woods, a little boy with CP recently had his wheelchair stolen from right in front of his house. Some people have serious issues.

  3. Sorry this happened to you. People will steal anything. Try to forget about it. I live wayyyyy out in country so we don't get things stolen off the porch, but one time someone stole our fence posts, painted them (we painted them green) then sold them to the guy who owned the land next to us. We looked at our old green fence posts, everyday.

  4. This is Joyce. Oh how awful. I'm not surprised though. Ohio just passed a law that all children up to age seven or 90 pounds whichever comes first must be in a booster seat and they are handing out a lot of tickets. So I'm sure that creates a market for under ground booster seat sales. Sad really

  7. Sorry to hear about it...but glad you're getting new ones to replace them without any additional costs. We had our suitcase stolen as we were unloading our luggage last year this time (in NYC) and Amelia's AFO's were in there (along with everything else...but that's another story). I hope when the thug got home and found them he had some kind of remorse for stealing a little girls' leg braces! Anyway, happy holidays!!!

  8. Such a terrible realization - that some loser stood right outsider you door and stole from you. I really do hope they were for the perpetrator's own chldren.

I feel like such a cad asking to be count in for a giveaway. but please count me in. That $250 could go a long want toward making this season merry and bright.

  10. Horrible, horrible thing. Maybe... maybe, not that this makes it OK, there are two kids sitting in boosters in their family's car right now, whose parents can only afford food because of food stamps, and welfare doesn't cover car seats. Maybe.

  12. UNBELIEVABLE! I hope that they were terribly disappointed by their find.

Make sure to call UPS and let them know. Maybe they can start putting packages in the back of the house.

I'm so sorry that happened to you!

  13. I think you actually can pawn them but I bet they got returned for credit or cash. They are spendy items. I'm glad the store is being kind to you.

  15. You're joking! That's unbelievable!

Thanks for the heads up though. We had a trampoline to be delivered today and I'd told them it'd be fine to leave it out front of our garage if we weren't home. After reading your post I MADE SURE that my DH would be home, JUST IN CASE....

It's great that they've replaced them for you!

And Jo, can't BELIEVE someone would steal a child's wheelchair. That's incredible.

  16. Craigslist, as someone else said...or EBAY. That's where stolen things go to make money.

I hope you telephoned the police and advised them of the crime, as well as filed a report. This isn't just a simple "rip off," it's a felony crime that happened in your neighborhood, on your front porch.

In my little town, because of the economy, people are having to lock their cars and homes now. There's been a rash of petty theft. One poor idiot got caught because there's only one pawn shop in a hundred or more miles, but the "small change" crooks, taking money and lightweight stuff (IPods and Tom Toms) for fencing from cars, and jars of quarters from the top of the refrig and so on, are still out in force.

However, what happened to you isn't petty theft, it's felony theft and it ain't right.

  19. And this is why I always tell the delivery person to leave stuff in my house. If I'm out, I tell the neighbor to keep it till I can go get it. I live way out in Wyoming .
