Another totally mortifying Mommy moment
It's Sunday morning. Sabrina and I have just whipped through Target, and now we're on a crowded checkout line. She's sitting in the shopping cart holding my big, brown slouchy purse; I've let her rummage through it to pass the time and prevent her from eyeballing the candy for sale.
"MOMMY, what is this?!"
She's holding up a tampon, holding it up high as if she is the Statue of Liberty raising her torch.
"It's for mommies," I mutter, and make a grab for it. Only she moves it out of my reach. I had no idea she could move that fast.
"MOMMY, what's it for?"
I manage to grab the thing and shove it back into my purse. Only now Sabrina is having an epiphany.
"OHHHHHHHHHH, MOMMY, I see you in the bathroom using that!"
I look down and try hard not to make eye contact with anyone standing nearby. Then I start giggling.
"MOMMMY, what's so funny?"
It takes forever to get to the checkout line.

At least you can laugh. I'd have probably crawled under my cart and cried.
ReplyDeleteI have a VERY persistent daughter. This once happened to me at the grocery store. I finally told her "those are special band-aids for mommies." And everyone around me laughed, but one woman announced loudly, "I'm stealing that explanation."
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I am cracking up, Ellen! Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteYou handled that very gracefully. I would have done what @Karen said.
ReplyDeleteBut @a Tonggu Momma's explanation is definitely steal-worthy!
Haha...this has so happened to me! Embarrasing yet funny! Great story for when she is older!
ReplyDeleteYes, my daughter once looked at a hot rod magazine and said "Mama, look, that's you with your nursies and your bellybutton, before you had Hannah and your nursies got so big." The man at the magazine rack turned to check me out to see if indeed I looked like the cover girl. I didn't.
ReplyDeletehehehehehe.... I would have been giggling too.
ReplyDeleteoh the things kids say...lol
ReplyDeleteWell, at least she can talk, right???? Sorry, I'm sure that was an embarassing, but I'm lookin' on the bright side:)
ReplyDeleteHa! Use a DivaCup and you wouldn't have those problems! Solved all of mine! The boys used to take them out of the wrapper and shoot them across the room!
ReplyDeletehahaha Gabi has pulled mine out while I've been paying for something at the grocery store and handed it to the clerk (luckily a female) as if she was paying for the groceries with it.. WOW FUN TIMES hahahah what else can you do but laugh. Glad you have a sense of humor about it.
ReplyDeleteVery cute!! While I was pregnant, I was just waiting for Sabrina to ask me how the baby got into my belly, at which point I would have told her to go and ask her mommy. As it turns out, she never asked me too much about the baby, but that doesn't mean that she didn't ask the questions to her mommy.
ReplyDeleteHa!!! I would have loved to see that. Great tampon in the picture. They aren't quite as fancy here in Canada.
ReplyDeleteThis is sooo funny! My daughter, Julia, did the same thing to me the other day - only it was in my house. I had no idea what to say and just said it's for mommies. She wanted to know more, but luckily she's easily distracted by chocolate - aren't we all! Thank goodness we had some left from Halloween!
ReplyDeleteThis is Joyce. Can't stop laughing here. And wherever did you get that photo? Too cute.
