ReplyDeleteMy mantra this year is patience and confidence. Last year kicked my ass as a teacher, so I figured this all out on vacation right before school started. It helps, and so far so good!

ReplyDeleteWith our school schedule, we are just a week away from 1st quarter parent-teacher conferences. The goal for 1st quarter was to make sure we all got enough sleep and had things like backpacks ready the night before. We weren't perfect, but a whole lot better. For the 2nd quarter we need to do a better job of keeping the house picked up and clean and do all we can to avoid H1N1.

ReplyDeleteMy twins just started preschool, and I just began my 14th year as an autistic support teacher, so this is a terrific question to ask myself right now.
As a teacher, I always hope to push my kids further than anyone expects them to be able to go. The past couple of years I have been super focused on my boys' special needs at home, so I hope and I refocus on my students and really excel again at work.
As a mommy of brand new preschoolers, both of whom have special needs, I am challenging myself to believe that they will be successful outside of the safety of our home. Due to the trauma of their premature birth and their subsequent special needs, I have somehow become so fearful that no one will ever be able to provide them with everything they need to be successful. They have come so far already with all of their therapy, and I have to trust that they are ready to enter the big wide world and show everyone how amazing they are!
AH I've wanted one of these forever. I keep going to her site and looking at all the cool stuff, but then something else comes up that I need to spend the money on!!!

ReplyDeleteWhat I hope for in this school year are no (or few) "transitional" meltdowns (when the schedule changes, we have at least one blow-up, sometimes more), a healthy and safe school year, and that the school administration gets off my "aaaahs" about their damn church, which I have absolutely no interest in joining. I do my saving at the savings bank!
My kids (both, this year, as the youngest is now old enough for a half day pre-K program) go to a Christian school, and no offense to Christians, but I just don't go for that "organized religion" stuff and I don't feel a need to give some fat guy in a shiny suit or some man in a dress a tenth of my meager salary on top of paying the fees for the kids (which I could not do alone without the help of their grandparents) in order to get some magic deity in the sky to "like" me or listen to me--I don't need or want a phone operator or a translator, thanks anyway.
The reason they're at this school is because I am, to be blunt, worried about bullying in our public school district (which is heavy on kids and short on teachers), the class size at the private school is really small, they're accomodating to my kids, and at least three of the teachers have special needs kids and are wired into the issues associated with that (they get a lot of "customers" because they do a good job on that score). If it weren't for the damn religion (again, no offense to those who like that stuff), it would be a great school. It's close enough to WALK to, too, which is good in bad weather or when the car is acting up.
There are just one or two people in the administration who are always trying to save my soul, and I tell them--over and over again-- politely to back off, yet every few months they come back at me again, like they think they'll wear me down or something. I tell them they're having the opposite effect but they are totally tone deaf. We'll see how it goes this year.
We have "Welcome Back" Day on Friday (which is also when they get the parents to fill in their volunteer forms) and then start back in earnest next week. Here's hoping for the best.
I hope to have a great LAST school year as my sons are seniors. I hope I am able to thank the MANY wonderful people that made a difference in my sons lives, many who are now my friends. I hope to forgive and forget the maybe three or four that did something totally wrong!! Last I hope to be rememebered as a parent that loved her sons, worked hard to help them be their best and was a team member with the professionals in our school system!

For Kasia I hope she: dances every time the teacher plays music, even if it's during Oh Canada, like she did on the first day; actually eats the snack I send for her; stops coming home with 3 pounds of sand in each shoe; and gets some sort of revenge on the kid in her class that keeps calling her a "baby"!

And I'm really really hoping that someday soon when I ask my little guy what he did in school, he can describe it for me!

Olivia is 4 and has some speech issues due to her trach. She's never really received consistent therapy and this will be her year!
