Joy-filled Wednesday: see Max use both his hands!

I will finish up Max's birth story tomorrow, my tear ducts need a break after the last two posts. Meanwhile, here's a video of him that shows how well the Botox injections worked on his right hand. It's always been the more messed-up one (to use the technical term), and he typically has to be reminded it even exists. But he sat down at the table and, without prompting, immediately started playing with two hands. Yes, I have a mildly annoying tendency to shout "YAY!" when Max does great stuff. It's a lot better than "DUDE!", I think.

That pink mystery substance is Flarp. I highly recommend it for kids with sensory issues, kids who need to be encouraged to manipulate their fingers and kids who generally like to make a mess. In other words, all kids! Disclaimer: I am not responsible if the stuff ends up in your child's hair. And trust me, it will. Disclaimer: I am also not responsible if it, say, ends up in your work tote bag and at the coffee shop you reach inside for your wallet, feel something slimy and let out a loud scream. Trust me, this could happen, too.

  1. Way to go Max!

I treasure pictures that I have of Evan using both his hands. I can't help but get a little sad seeing them. Hopefully someday he will start using both hands again.

  2. Great job Max...

    Mr. Wizard (me) says...
You want to add 2 parts of white glue to 1 part of liquid starch. So if you use 1/2 cup of white glue use 1/4 cup of starch. Use food coloring... You can also google "silly putty recipe"...

    :-)

  3. I just love you, Ellen! That is great stuff, that FLARP--kinda like Silly Putty, except it looks like you get more of it--and only a buck ninety nine! I'm going to the store to buy some today!

That "Yay!" of yours isn't annoying at all--I do the exact same thing, too! It must be something that is "universally genetic" only we all don't realize it.

So hey, girl--a great big "YAAAAY!" for today's topic!

  4. Yay Max! He looks great using both hands. I'm so happy to hear that the botox was a success for him.
Flarp - is that what it's called? When Daniel had constraint induced therapy, I think he got banned from the Flarp at OT due to an unfortunate incident involving a very overtired toddler. I'll try to find some for home use, though.

  5. YAY MAX!

Flarp...yep, my kids love the stuff. And so do I if it stays on the table and doesn't get flinged all over the room.

  8. I was visiting over the weekend and noticed a definite change in Max's use of his right hand. This is great!!! I am very proud of him - his determination is amazing. The flarp is pretty cool also - sort of slimy, but fun.

  9. Awesome! I love seeing his smile and hands in action!
I didn't find your voice annoying at all! But the whole time I was thinking "sensory issues! sensory issues! alert! sensory issues!" LOL I'm not sure who is worse when it comes to gooey stuff...me or Addison!

  10. Today I was watching your video in the waiting room of the HBOT facility. A lady I've met while here walked by and said, "You must be watching something awesome because you have joy written all over your face." Yay Max!

  12. I love your exuberance Ellen, as I'm sure your kids do as well. Max's face, by the way, is so darn cute...that smile that lights up in his eyes is just awesome. And Sabrina reminded me of a Hollywood diva the way she was brushing her hair off her face, over and over again!
