How I didn't get sick all winter (till now)
Props to Kate for yesterday's informative, overall terrific post. I am definitely putting some of those strategies into practice with Max.
So, I'm coming down with something—watery eyes, weak knees, feverish. Amazing thing is, this is the first time I have been sick the entire season. Seriously. Even the kids, aside from one ear infection (Sabrina), a bad cold (Max) and a cough (Sabrina), haven't had it so bad. Dave only got sick once with a cold, though in typical man form it was like he'd come down with malaria or something.
I've been pondering why it is that I've escaped all the plagues that have befallen friends and coworkers, and here is exactly what I think did the trick:
• I have not been eating right.
• I have hardly been exercising.
• I have most certainly not been obsessively cleaning my hands with Purell. Or doing much of anything to sanitize the house.
• I regularly kiss my germ-laden kids on the lips.
• I have let them sneeze on me. Once, Sabrina deposited a booger right on my hand. You know, just because.
• I have done the twelve-minute walk to my morning train with wet hair, an open coat and no hat.
• I have been staying up till all hours to blog/catch up on American Idol/generally loll away my life in front of some sort of media...
• ...and then I've been getting up at 6:45 a.m. for work.
So, there you have it. Try my plan! Maybe it'll work for you!
Mom, please calm down.

I also follow your plan of not getting sick. In addition, I regularly go out to check the mail in bare feet no matter what the weather is, and I have a son who believes that the front of my shirt is actually a large tissue. As one of the nuns at my mother's elementary school used to say:

You realize, of course, that now that you have bragged about not getting sick you have doomed yourself. Whatever it is you are coming down with will turn out to be Martian Death Flu, and you will spend the next three weeks on the edge of oblivion while everyone around you is absolutely fine.
Hope you feel better soon.

My gut hurts from laughing so hard! My husband has malaria too! What is it with men and their inabilities to cope with illness? It just kills me.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should seriously considering following your tricks. I'm just getting over some type of nasty flu topped with strep throat. Plus, a double ear infection for Logan and a nasty rash break out for Levi. Oh, and my husband's near death experience with malaria. What the heck is going on over here?
Hope you don't get too sick. Feel better soon.
Sorry to hear you're feeling unwell!
ReplyDeleteI hope it doesn't last.
Being at the opposite end of the seasons to you, I just hope that our winter this year isn't anything like last years. We were all sick for most of it.
Have a nice cup of chicken soup and a block of chocolate! xo
I hope you're feeling better soon......maybe it'll just turn out to be something minor like a cold.....whatever it is....take care of yourself!
ReplyDeleteIt could also be that because you've been around all the sick people your system just crashed and you caught the 1st thing. This always happens to me. I plague could pass through and I probably wouldn't get it, until everyone else doesn't have it anymore. My allergist told me that's usually what happends for people with strong immune systems.
ReplyDeleteI never, EVER get sick!!!!
ReplyDeleteEXCEPT, of course, when I really don't need to get sick! Having that formal photo with the kids taken? Here comes a cold with a huge honking red nose!!! A hundred years from now, my decendants will say "That red nose doesn't run in the family, I hope...'
Volunteered for a community project and they're all relying on you? Here comes the flu, so you drag yourself out ANYWAY and make it ten times worse! AND....everyone at the event thinks you're a real Crappy Crabapple and wonders why you even bothered to volunteer!!!
Immune systems are a wonderful thing when they work well. When they let you down, though, watch out!!!
I hope you feel better soon!
It's just so sad that we don't get "Mom Sick Days". I long for the sick days when I could lie in bed, not get dressed all day, order in supplies from the pharmacy and local Chinese place or diner on the corner. Movies and sleep all day in my corner of the sofa -- stocked with the portable phone, tissues, beverage, magazines and cough drops. With sympathetic phone calls from co-workers, boyfriends, sisters and Mom & Dad. Oh to be there again would be heaven -- except for that whole "I'm sick" part.
ReplyDeleteFeel better soon!
HAHAHA! I'm on a similar wellness plan :D
ReplyDeleteHope you're feeling better now!
