Stuff I missed in Mommy school #1: How to prevent lice

Anyone else remember Wacky Packs stickers from their childhood?

Happy weekend! I'm looking forward to a visit from my Mom and sister. Dave and I are dying to see Slumdog Millionaire, which is supposed to be an incredible story. We finally saw Milk last weekend and while I am not a big fan of Sean Penn himself, he did an outstanding job acting in the film. It was amusing to see such a real-life macho asshole kissing another guy.

OK, on to...bugs! I was talking with one of my best friends, Hedy, last night, and she was telling me a few kids in her kids' school had lice. Then she told me about Fairytales Hair Care, products that are said to naturally repel lice. I was like, how did you hear about that? She always seems to know critical mom information that I somehow missed. Every mom needs a Hedy in her life.

This summer, some kid in Sabrina's camp got lice, but it wasn't an outbreak, and so far I haven't heard of any such thing in Max's school. My sister and I got nits as kids, I still remember how much the shampoo stung my eyes. Worse, my mother made me chop off all my hair, so I basically had a boy crew cut. When I'd walk into the girl's room at the library or a restaurant, inevitably I'd hear, "Little boy, that's the girl's bathroom!" Still not sure I've recovered from that.

  1. Last year we had that Mersa (Staff Infection) go around the schools. Every one went nuts. They closed the school for a day to "clean" it event.

Kind of point less, because the staff didn't do a very good job (I know people that know people...) and trust me, it was more like a coffee break.

Staff Infections, like lice have been around for YEARS before the media blew it up. It's life. Deal with it. Lice dose not mean your dirty either, in fact they prefer clean hair.

Micro-waving the bedding is a nice trick.

  2. Honestly, I didn't even know you could repel them. I remember lice 'treatments'. That thin comb through my thick, kinky hair wasn't fun.

So..do you keep your fingers crossed that you're child wasn't infected and then rush out to get this and apply?

BTW- my head is now starting to itch too.

  5. I remember when Ellen and I got those dreaded lice bugs. We had just come back from our summer at a bungalow colony in the Catskills and I remember that my mom bumped into our friend Steve's mother and she told our mom that he had lice. Next thing you knew, we had it also. I vaguely remember going somewhere to have our hair cut and having to use special shampoo, though I don't remember being that traumatized, even though it was not a pleasant experience. Can't wait to see the cutest kids ever!!!

  7. "Stuff I missed in Mommy school" haha, HILARIOUS!!!!

You know what? That might have been in a lecture that day the bus was late and you missed part of the morning. Oh well, it happens to the best of us.

  8. I have a Hedy in my life too - it's my sister. I always refer to her for mummying information. I don't know where she knows all this stuff, but she just does. It thrills me no end (somewhat pathetically!) when I am able to tell her something that she doesn't know.

I really want to see Slumdog Millionaire too. Let us know if it's any good.

  9. I so remember Wacky Packs. Knock on wood but I have never had lice (of any kind) and my kids haven't had it yet either. Now that I've said it they will come home with it tomorrow.

  10. Do you know what they active ingredient is in this lice repelling shampoo? A lot of people recommend rosemarie and/or tea tree oil.

It's a good idea to skip the toxic shampoos altogether these days because the new super lice are developing resistance faster than ever. Learning how to effectively get rid of lice without poison shampoos ahead of time can help you avoid panicking if and when they do come to your house.
