Smart TV shows for kids
First off, I really appreciated the feedback on the post about the labels we put on our kids. Mel and Billie are so right about mentioning the person first and saying "I have a kid with special needs" instead of "a special needs kid." I will remember that. The article Dianne linked to in her comment was dead-on, everyone should check it out.
I bumped into a neighbor of mine who works over at PBS and she told me some happy news: They're doing a new version of The Electric Company, starting in January. I took a look at the sneak preview, it doesn't seem anything like the old version (which ran from 1971 to 1977) but it does seem creative. Do any of you remember this program? I learned a lot about spelling from it, especially from those two talking silhouettes (check out this YouTube snippet). Come to think of it, I would love to introduce my kids to Mr. Rogers. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood!
Generally, I let my kids watch Sesame Street, Blue's Clues, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Jack's Big Music Show (which gets amazing musical guests) on TV. Max is also happy to sit around watching NASCAR and any show involving cars or trucks. He enjoys cooking shows, too, which may be wishful thinking given my lack of cooking. Which programs do you let your kids watch? And which ones would you never, ever, not in a million years let them watch? Spongebob Squarepants, I'm talking to you.

I love the electric company! And Zoom! Remember that? But, I think I'd rather come watch the food network w max! Why do I think he's a big Giada fan????
ReplyDeleteElizabeth loves the Little Einstiens, I love that she learns classical compositions and is introduced to famous arists. We do not have the t.v. on much as there is so much to do in a day but when it is on she is in another world all google eyed at the t.v.. We have started our Friday movie nights we all snuggle on the couch and watch a movie together.
ReplyDeleteWow, Nathan watches similar things to Max! Wiggles, Mickey's clubhouse, Sesame Street, Jack's Big Music Show, Lilo & Sticth. Those are the ones we record. Then on weekends he gets to watch movies, his fvorite is The Incredibles, and he also loves Liko & Stitch moves, Meet the Robinsons, Monsters Inc, Bee Movie, and a few others. They're not smart, but they're sure entertaining!
ReplyDeleteWhat a coincidence! We were both talking about TV at the same time!
ReplyDeleteAs I was saying on my blog post, there's far too much TV watching around our way, but it's closely monitored.
Bean LOVES the Wiggles. He knows all the moves to their songs and dances around the house to them with great enthusiasm. BC loves the Bananas in Pyjamas most of all, but also likes Postman Pat, Noddy and Play School. Most recently he's taken a shine to Caillou and Charlie and Lola. Oh, and how could I forget, they both really really love Blues Clues.
In answer to your question, we do have Sesame St here, but my boys aren't that taken by it - not sure why.
I was a huge fan of Fraggle Rock when I was a young un too! But I don't think I ever saw 'the Electric Company'.
Yep, as I said, far too much TV around our way!!! I justify it by saying I rarely leave them to their own devices in front of the TV - ie I interact with them, engage with what they are watching too and we definitely DO have some TV free time. I'm determined to cut back on TV a lot once they get a bit older.....
I used to love that show! And yes - Zoom - 02135!
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely different with tv these days -
and having children over a wide age span makes it very challenging - my 14 year old should have more choice in his shows than my 6 year old, but what happens when he's watching and she plops herself onto the couch?
American Idol is a must-see for my second-grader. I'm not complaining. This is the kid who didn't speak 'til he was three. The one the experts said would never mainstream. The fact that he can remember who's competing from week to week, and that on re-cap night he can sing along with perfect pitch assures me that one family's reality TV is another family's speech therapy session.
ReplyDeleteI grew up on The Magic Garden, Electric Company, and Fraggle Rock, as well as early '80s Nickelodeon shows like Danger Mouse and Today's Special.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Food Network show happens to be "Unwrapped" with Marc Summers. I love the candy episodes!
we like sesame street too. thomas the train is a big hit with my son, and they both like veggie tales. they also really like Super Why. my daughter likes Dora but we've never actually watched her. she must pick it up from her friends at school. we have some Dora books but they are really annoying so i don't think i'll ever have it on at home unless i'm really desperate.
